Journey
My journey on art began before I can remember for my mother says I used to drool for long hours before I learnt to say something. And my training supported by my parents really helped. It has always been walking on a two-lane-path for I have been interested in Painting and Music in equal measure. I was lucky to get formal education in Art while pursuing an semiformal education in Indian Classical Music. |

I always try to bring out art which is understood by people where they can relate to the message. This is always a challenge because my basic style is in the realm of Abstract. But this also helps me in tackling those subjects which require a spiritual and sublime message through a style that is unique to me. My music also follows the same approach. While I revel in classical singing, my singing is meant for the common man while being true to classical traditions. My development as an artist was to an extent shaped by one watershed event – The Anti Sikh Genocide of 1984 which I lived through as a student. The artistic expression grew out of its artistic confines to the common man’s path for I understood that for art to be meaningful it must touch lives of common people. It must help them transport to a world which they understand. The result was an epic which I did at that time and which was shaped by the tragedy, the anguish, the anger and revulsion. I redid it recently, the new work is in the gallery and has been featured at I get my creative ideas when I am working on something else. So these always relate to how to understand something in a new way. so there’s hardly any ‘Art for Art’s Sake’ kind of work from me. I work on specific themes and work with all media though my favored media are Oil on Canvas and Mix-media on Paper. I have worked in some creative phases with a very limited palette and in others with a varied palette, sometimes I work with dark and dull and others I work with fresh and bright. Punjabi motifs and style are the staple of my paintings. Sikh thought and sikh philosophy are the underlying themes of my work. Lot of recent work is an attempt to understand, interpret and convey visually the thoughts of Gurbani. Other themes that have always run through my work are Woman, Nature and Spirituality. While some works are specifically on these themes, these also form the means through which I interpret everything. I consider two of my works as epics – one on 1984 genocide and the other on Baisakhi 1699. Currently I am working mostly on Sikh thought and Gurbani. |
